The 2024 Logie Awards lit up the screen with glitz, glamour, and a sprinkle of humour. The big winner of the night was Trent Dalton’s coming-of-age drama “Boy Swallows Universe,” which scooped up five awards.
Based on Dalton’s popular semi-autobiographical book, this series captured hearts and trophies alike. Young star Felix Cameron, who plays Eli Bell, snagged the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent and the TV Week Silver Logie for Best Lead Actor in a Drama. Cameron’s co-star, Bryan Brown, humorously dubbed “Bryanasaurus” by Cameron, picked up Best Supporting Actor.
Set in 1980s Brisbane, the series didn’t stop there. Sophie Wilde, portraying Frances Bell, won Best Supporting Actress, and the show itself was named Best Miniseries or Telemovie. Dalton’s acceptance speech was a heartwarming shout-out to Brisbane and suburban mums everywhere.
Meanwhile, Rob Sitch’s comedy “Utopia” was no slouch, winning Best Scripted Comedy Program. Kitty Flanagan took home Best Lead Actress in a Comedy, and Sitch himself was awarded Best Lead Actor in a Comedy. Their victories left audiences laughing and applauding.
Beloved actor Larry Emdur had a night to remember, claiming the coveted Gold Logie and the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter. Emdur’s acceptance speech was full of charm and wit, joking about being the “most axed” host in showbiz history. His father’s sage advice of “Just be nice to everyone” brought smiles and laughter, though Emdur added, “But there’s so many arseholes in this business. So many.”
Rebecca Gibney was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame, honouring her illustrious career. Gibney dedicated the award to her resilient mother and the many visionary women who inspired her.
The night also featured touching musical tributes. Missy Higgins performed “The Sound of White” during the in-memoriam segment, while Guy Sebastian and Jess Mauboy honoured John Farnham with a powerful duet.
