Police have confirmed a man who was killed by a freight train in Burnie in the early hours of yesterday morning was trespassing in the Burnie Port area when he was struck.

The 36 year-old man from Strahan had been living in Burnie for the past week according to police, possibly sleeping rough.

Police say he was struck by a train unloading containers and general freight for Toll Shipping around 4.50 am and discovered around 20 minutes later.

Detective Inspector Steve Jones says the man was dead by the time emergency services arrived.

He says police are treating the death as accidental.

It’s believed the man was homeless and had been in the Burnie area for the last week.

Police say the man owned a large black suitcase, and they are asking anyone who finds it to contact them.

The driver of the train and TasRail staff have been given support and the man’s family have been notified.
