Construction has commenced on the $14.5 million redevelopment of the North West Regional Hospital’s Emergency Department and ambulance drop-off area.
The upgrades are designed to improve security and safety of the ED and were triggered in part by the stabbing of a Doctor in 2023.
The reconfigured ED will include expanded triage and assessment areas, improved staff amenities, facilities for people living with disabilities or mental health challenges, and those who have experienced sexual assault.
According to Primary Health Chief Executive Paula Hyland, the emergency department sees about 30 thousand presentations a year and sometimes over 100 a day.
Tasmanian firm Vos Construction & Joinery has been awarded the contract, with works due for completion in mid-2028.
