Wind farm appeal gets the chop

Independent Braddon MP Craig Garland says Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek must act to reject the proposed 100-turbine Robbins Island Wind Farm in the light of new evidence on the migratory habits of the endangered orange-bellied parrot.

A appeal against the project was dismissed in the Tasmanian Supreme Court yesterday.

Mr Garland says Robbins Island has been recognised as a crucial stopover for migratory birds, with an interim report from the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment showed the parrots were mainly near Robbins Island in March and April.

However, he says new research by well-known seabird and shorebird ecologist Dr Eric Woelher has found some parrots are still in the vicinity in June and may not have even migrated to the mainland at all.

Dr Woelher says the loss of even one parrot is critical.
