Five young people are seriously injured after a distressing crash at Sidmouth in the state’s north early on Monday.

A four-wheel drive was towing a trailer with four horses on board when the vehicle left the Batman Highway and hit a tree stump, the float rolling at around 1:45 am.

The car’s driver, a 20-year-old woman, and her four younger passengers were taken to Launceston General Hospital before an 18-year-old was airlifted to Melbourne and a 17-year-old transported to Hobart.

An equine vet was also called in, but tragically the horses couldn’t be saved.

Police were on the scene within eight minutes after a Triple Zero smartphone crash detector alerted authorities automatically.

Crash investigation officers remained on the scene hours later.
