Tasmania’s Parliament will look at banning the display of nazi symbols as it sits in Hobart this week.

The Rockliff Government is proposing penalties of up to three months prison – or double that for repeated instances – in its amendment to the Police Offences Act.

“Labor welcomes any action that sends a message to the community that there is no place for hate speech in our state,” said Shadow Attorney-General Sarah Lovell.

“However, the bill does not go far enough. It should be expanded to include the banning of other displays of hate such as the Nazi salute and hate crimes motivated by homophobia and transphobia.”

It comes as Equality Tasmania raises concerns about Kelly-Jay Keen Minshull’s rally on Parliament lawns tomorrow.

Neo Nazis attended a similar gathering called by the Standing for Women founder in Melbourne yesterday.
