Tasmania’s Premier travelled to Government House in Hobart to make a statement on the passing of the Queen aged 96.
Jeremy Rockliff has extended his condolences to the Royal Family and acknowledged trips to the state across her 70 year reign.
“All Tasmanians will join with me in pausing to reflect on Her Majesty’s wonderful service and such an extraordinary and remarkable life.”
Former Senator for Tasmania and now Australia’s Monarchist League’s Chairman Eric Abetz met the Queen on several occasions.
“When I had the privilege of showing her around the work for the dole scheme in Launceston in my home state, one young shy fellow slipped away from the group because I think he felt self conscious and Her Majesty deliberately walked off the path to him.”
Upper House member of parliament Rob Valentine recalls the Queen’s trip to Tasmania in 2000, when he was Lord Mayor of Hobart.
The Queen was greeted by a crowd of around 8000 down Salamanca Place.
“She was amazing in the way she dealt with children passing flowers to her, she just showed a degree of care in the way she held the flowers the chidlren were providing to her, she held them long enough for the children to know they were appreciated.”
