Sub-standard contractors’ work delays bridge project

Coastal motorists are once again being disadvantaged by sub-standard roadworks being carried out by private contractors.

In the past sections of the Bass Highway between Devonport and Deloraine have had to be repaired more than once, only months after being completed.

It’s now been revealed delays to the Cam River Bridge at Somerset have also been delayed due to sub-standard work.

Traffic was supposed to transition from the old bridge to the new one last week, but Roads Tasmania says it won’t happen now until early January at the earliest.

A Facebook post says there has been issues with the road base which did not meet specifications, requiring additional work to rectify.

The post says the cost of the additional work will be met by the contractor.

Infrastructure Minister Michael Ferguson says the new bridge is still on target to be completed by April.

Meanwhile, improvements to the Bass Highway at Crayfish Creek have been completed as part of the on-going improvements of the Wynyard to Marrawah section of the highway.
