A life size Teddy Sheean statue has been unveiled at the Remembrance Day service in Latrobe where the Tasmanian war hero grew up.
18 year old Teddy died on December 1st 1942 when he went down with the HMAS Armidale strapped to a canon trying to protect his mates as the Japanese attacked by air.
Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Mark Hammond has been personally present for the occasion in Latrobe.
“This is particularly special as we have the unique privilege in memorialising one such act of service, sacrifice and courage through the unveiling of a plaque and statue in honour of Ordinary Seaman Teddy Sheean.”
Teddy’s nephew Garry Ivory recalls the long road to securing a posthumous Victoria Cross.
“I read a book in 1989 called The Ship That Had To Die, I started thinking well why hasn’t this young fella’ got a VC, so I started knocking on politicians’ doors the very next day and 31 years later we were successful.”
