Although the Campbell Cove is out of the water, it’s yet to be lifted into a special cradle on board the heavy lifting ship AAL Melbourne, brought in from Burnie at the weekend, alongside the wreck of the York Cove.

TasPorts chief operating officer Stephen Casey says the Campbell Cove was allowed to de-water and drain overnight while suspended by the Melbourne’s cranes above the containment area.

Draining mud, water and silt reduces the weight of the tug and allows any fuel or oil drained out to remain in the containment area, which was also skimmed overnight.

Work is now underway to finalise the safe landing of the tug on the Melbourne, before the two wrecks are taken to Brisbane to be scrapped.
