A challenge has been made for Hobart’s $750 million waterfront stadium to be put to the people.
Labor’s railed against the stadium’s cost while services such as health and education flounder with resources deficits and staff shortages due to burnout and recruitment problems.
Leader Rebecca White is now demanding the decision be handed over to voters.
“There should be a referendum to hear the voices of the Tasmanian community who are the tax payers being asked to foot the bill for this project before it proceeds any further.”
She argues the proposal was not taken to the last election and Tasmanians are rightly asking why this has suddenly become such a high priority when the Government is failing to get the basics right in so many key areas.
Half of the stadium will be paid for by the state government if Tasmania wins its own team in the AFL, with funding for the other half still undetermined.
