A North-West police officer has been shot and killed in the line of duty following an incident at North Motton yesterday morning.
Police say the 57 year-old Ulverstone-based constable approached a home on Allison Road as part of routine duties shortly after 11am with a fellow officer, when he was allegedly shot by the male resident.
Another officer discharged the firearm towards the alleged offender, who received non-life threatening injuries and then surrendered to police.
However, the officer was critically injured and died at the scene.
The alleged offender was treated in hospital.
No charges have been laid at this stage.
The coroner attended the scene and a professional standards investigation is underway.
While 18 Tasmania Police officers have lost their lives in the line of duty, in the past 100 years, mainly as a result of traffic crashes, fatal police shootings are rare in Tasmania, with the last one being recorded in 1922, according to the National Police Memorial honour roll.
