Police focus on drugs and firearms

More than $1 million worth of methyl-amphetamine, or ice, has been seized by police on the North-West Coast in the past three months.

The figure is being highlighted during Crimestoppers Week this week, which this year is focusing on drugs and firearms.

Police say the drugs aren’t being manufactured in Tasmania, but being imported into the state mainly through the mail system, the Spirit of Tasmania and through Devonport, Burnie, Hobart and Launceston Airports.

In addition to the meth seized since July, the North-West Coast’s drugs and firearms unit has also seized 23 firearms and $172,000 in cash believed to be proceeds from crime.

More than a kilogram of ice has been seized, which has an average street value of around $900,000 a kilo.
