The cost for the proposed North-West greyhound and harness racing facility has more than doubled.
It comes only days after the Latrobe Council approved a development application from TasRacing to build the facility at Mill Road, opposite the Devonport Airport.
The facility will replace the Devonport Showground, which closed more than 18 months ago, after being sold for a housing development.
The value of the project on the development application was $18 million, for which the State Government had committed to $8 million, with TasRacing to fund the balance.
However, Braddon MP and Racing Minister Felix Ellis says TasRacing has now informed him the costs have blown out to $38.6 million.
Mr Ellis says the Government is working with TasRacing to understand the rationale behind the significant increase.
He says the facility is an important piece of infrastructure for the North-West Coast, but it’s important it’s built for the right price and not just any price.
