A mass stranding of whales on Tasmania’s West Coast is having to end with no survivors.
Range Shelley Graham says it became apparent there was no prospect of successfully pushing the survivors of 157 stranded False Killer Whales near Arthur River out to open water.
“The swell is up quite a lot and it’s quite windy as well down there, it’s quite rough and the animals just can’t get past the break to get out, they just keep turning around and coming back towards the beach.”
It was decided the most humane option was euthanasia.
The last time that particular species was known to strand in Tasmania was in 1974 near Stanley.
