The North-West Coast could get a new Woolworths supermarket if a development application lodged with the Burnie City Council gets approval.

The application says the complex, situated on Marine Terrace at South Burnie, will also have tenancies available for other retailers and will take up around 4000 square metres of floor space, costing around $20 million.

It will be Burnie’s second Woollies, with the existing supermarket at Upper Burnie.

The South Burnie site, which has been purchased by Woollies, is currently zoned for commercial use and includes the Motors Hyundai Dealership, the Motors Service Centre, the former Motors Holden dealership and a second-hand car dealership.

The application says if approved, the project will be completed in the 2026-2027 financial year.

Public submissions on the project close tomorrow.

Meanwhile, construction is expected to start later this year on the $40 million Stony Rise Village development in Devonport, for which Woolworths will be the anchor tenant.
