Hobart City Council’s planning committee will examine a proposal for another 65 flats at the Queens Walk social housing complex.

The plans for two new towers at the Cornelian Bay site, which have been recommended for approval, would take the total number of multiple dwellings there to 150.

Existing residents have objected, claiming it’ll create a “slum”, amidst concerns maintenance at Queens Walk is already substandard, including roof membranes damaged by cockatoos.

Housing Choices Tasmania has responded to the concerns.

“Housing Choices Tasmania has a panel of contractors who understand our residents and our property and are diligent in their work,” said the housing operator in a submission to council.

“We respond extremely proactively to all maintenance requests with an 87 per cent resident satisfaction rate and our turnaround time in responding to maintenance requests is well above standard benchmarks.”

The proposal will go before the full council on Tuesday.
