New speed limit for Bass Highway section

October 15, 2024 12:35 pm in by

The trip between Ulverstone and Burnie on the Bass Highway will take longer soon – but only by 15 seconds.

That’s the estimate from the Department of State Growth of the effect of lowering the speed limits from 110 km/hr to 90 km/hr between Heybridge and Sulphur Creek roundabouts.

The Department says the speed reduction for the 1.9 km section of the highway has been prompted by requests from nearby local communities and a history of single-vehicle rollover crashes in the area.

The speed limit for the section of highway immediately West of the stretch was lowered from 100 km/hr to 90 km/hr in in 2021 and has resulted in a significant reduction in crash statistics according to the Department.
