Australia’s most photographed rubbish bins will continue to draw the attention of visitors to Penguin with the seaside town’s iconic penguin-themed bins getting a makeover.
The Central Coast Council has worked with the Penguin Makeover Committee and Penguin Composites to make sure the new bins kept both the council and the community happy.
Several thousand people signed a petition to keep the bins earlier this year when the council announced the bins would be replaced, with uniform bins for the whole municipality.
However, a compromise was found and the end result has delighted locals and the council alike.
The 12 new penguin-themes bins are twice the capacity of the old ones at 240 litres, with six of them as designated recycling bins.
The penguin theme is identical to the original bins, designed by local artist Jenny Lee Hutton.
