New Cam River Bridge fully open to traffic

Traffic is flowing in both directions on the much-anticipated $20 million replacement Cam River Bridge on the Bass Highway at Somerset.

Half the new bridge was opened to westbound traffic heading to Somerset two weeks ago, with the eastbound opened early on Tuesday morning.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Michael Ferguson says the new bridge has been delivered on time and on budget and is higher and stronger than the old bridge and able to withstand extreme weather events like the 2022 flood, which are predicted to become more frequent in the future.

Mr Ferguson said the new bridge is also much wider, which will increase the capacity for traffic to keep moving in the event of a breakdown or crash.

Demolition of the old bridge will start today as well as landscaping near the new bridge.

Work is continuing on the nearby junction of the Murchison and Somerset Highways, which includes traffic lights, which is due to be finished in April.
