New Burnie court complex won’t be ready until 2026

Burnie’s much anticipated new court complex is still more than two years away.

The Department of Justice has provided an update on the $86 million project on the corner of Wilson and Ladbrooke Streets, which it says will hopefully be built by the end of 2026.

The Department says site acquisition has been completed and a successful architect to design the complex is expected to be appointed in the very near future.

Project details and plans are expected to be submitted to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works by the end of the year.

It says the new complex will be fit for purpose and provide efficient and effective operation of both Supreme and Magistrate’s Courts as well as meeting local expectations.

One of those expectations is provision for a court room for the Federal Circuit and Family Court.

The State Government has offered to make provision for the court in the plans, but the Federal Government has yet to commit.

Federal Member for Braddon Gavin Pearce says last week’s Federal Budget was an ideal opportunity for the Feds to lock it in, but it didn’t happen.
