New Burnie court complex a step closer

Work on the much-anticipated nee Burnie Court Complex could start soon, with a development application being submitted to the Burnie City Council to demolish the existing buildings on the proposed site in the CBD on Wilson Street.

The Department of Justice says the $86 million project is expected to take two years to complete and likely to be open for business by mid-2027.

The new facility will replace the ageing Burnie Magistrate’s and Supreme Courts, which are no longer fit for purpose, as well including provision for the Federal Family Circuit Court.

The State Government originally proposed in 2018 that the complex be built on the site of the former University of Tasmania Cradle Coast Campus on Mooreville Road.

However, considerable community backlash forced a back-down from the Government in 2022, with the new CBD site becoming available.
