Nation-leading research conducted at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture’s Dairy Research Facility at Elliott has been given a boost with $1.2 million to extend a major research project for an additional 12 months.
The funding was announced yesterday at the institute’s field day at the research facility.
Institute director Professor Mike Rose says the Dairy High 2 programme will now be extended until September 2026, taking the total to $7.7 million invested in the project since 2020.
Professor Rose says the research programme focuses on feed-base research to help dairy farmers maintain efficient, profitable and sustainable pasture based dairy systems into the future.
He says a key component of the research exploring ways of reducing the amount of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser used on dairy farms but still meeting high targets for pasture and milk solid production while applying less nitrogen and utilising mixed pasture species including clover.
Professor Rose says results to date have been very encouraging.
The Institute also runs a vegetable research farm at Forthside.
