A pilot programme allowing Tasmania Police recruits to be mentored on the job before they graduate will be rolled out next week.

The force’s newest intake of 20 recruits will be the first to include in-field mentorship along with their traditional training.

The mentorship will include 10 weeks of on the job training with a dedicated and experienced Tasmania Police officer, along with 18 weeks of traditional academy-based training.

Police and Emergency Services Minister Felix Ellis says the new recruits will be posted to police stations around the state, to start their in-field mentoring after their first 16 weeks at the academy.

Mr Ellis says the new recruitment will also free up police numbers to work towards a full-time tactical unit tasked with responding to sieges and other dangerous situations, which is now a step closer.
