Police have been involved in an ongoing investigation into the mistreatment of penguins in Burnie on Sunday 12 March 2023.
On Friday 17 February, following the release of CCTV images to the media, a number of youths were identified and subsequently assisted police with their investigation.
Information provided by these youths led police to a location on Burnie West Beach where a deceased penguin from the incident was located.
As a result of this investigation, 3 youths aged between 12 and 15 will be proceeded against for offences relating to cruelty to animals and the maiming and killing of a protected species.
They will be subject to the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.
Police would thank members of the community who came forward and provided crucial information which led to the identification of these youths.
