Hobart population hot spots

New data shows distinct trends in Tasmania’s population growth.

Freshly released ABS data shows Hobart’s population between 2011 and the end of June last year grew nearly 35,000 to just over 251,000 a solid 16%.

The rest of Tasmania grew, although by a more subdued 7.3%, or 21,700.

Highest growth rates in that 10 years were all Hobart, Rokeby up by 45%, followed by the Brighton-Pontville area at 35%, and Old Beach-Otago climbing 33%.

Areas with the largest growth by the number of people:

  • Kingston – Huntingfield (up by 2,800 people) in Hobart’s south
  • Rokeby (2,500) on the eastern shore of the Derwent River
  • Sorell – Richmond (2,300) in Hobart’s north-east

The areas with the highest density at June 2021 all surrounded Hobart’s central business district: 

  • West Moonah (2,500 people per sq km)
  • Moonah (2,100)
  • Sandy Bay (1,800)
