Historic jobless rate

Unemployment for July in Tasmania’s fallen sharply to 3.7%, down point 6 for the lowest ever in the state’s history.

Underemployment’s also dramatically improved in the state in the ABS data.

Australia’s jobless rate decreased to 3.4%.

Federal Employment Minister Tony Burke is finding many other positives in the figures.

“At 3.4% that is the lowest unemployment rate we have had since August 1974, underemployment is down to 6%, youth unemployment is down to 7%, down from 7.9%.”

However, the opposition’s Michaelia Cash notes the result is due to more part time hiring at the expense of full time work.

“When you actually go behind the figure itself alarm bells should start ringing for the Albanese Government, we saw a loss of full time jobs.”
