Independent Legislative Council candidate Casey Huscutt has a narrow lead in the battle to win the seat of Montgomery after his mother and long-serving Liberal Leonie Hiscutt retired at the end of her term.
Mr Hiscutt hs secured 31.0 per cent of the vote, narrowly leading Liberal candidate and former senator Stephen Parry.
The seat of Montgomery, takes in Central Coast, Sheffield, Ridgley and most of Burnie, with around 28,000 people eligible to have voted on Saturday.
The Tasmanian Electoral Commission says counting will continue on Monday, with postal votes to be counted later in the week, with a final result not likely to be known until after the distribution of preferences.
Voting was also held on Saturday for the Southern upper house seats of Nelson and Pembroke, with sitting members looking likely to be returned.
Independent Meg Webb has 52 per cent of the primary vote in Nelson, while Labor’s Luke Edmunds has 44 per cent of first preferences in Pembroke, more than double his nearest rival.
