A Bridgewater man is in the Royal Hobart Hospital after a high-speed crash.
Alarmed members of the public alerted police to a car speeding across the Bowen Bridge towards the eastern shore at about 1:30 on Wednesday morning.
Responding officers found the vehicle had struck a light pole at the Old Beach roundabout on the East Derwent Highway.
Initial investigations indicate the silver Commodore sedan had lost control after entering the roundabout on the wrong side of the road.
Firefighters and paramedics took around an hour to cut the driver from the wreck.
The 42-year-old was listed as stable later in the morning as police appeal for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the vehicle to get in touch.
