A community forum designed to shed a light on the working conditions of seasonal migrant workers on farms on the North-West Coast and North of the state will be held in Devonport on Saturday.
The Fair Go For Farm Workers Community Forum is being organised by the Australian Workers Union and will be held at the East Devonport Recreation Centre from 3-6 pm.
People working through the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility, or PALM, scheme are invited to attend, as well as other seasonal workers, visa holders, working holiday makers, and backpackers.
While conditions on farms and accommodation for seasonal migrant workers have recently improved in some cases, the union says it’s still hearing about overcrowding in houses and bedrooms and high prices being charged for accommodation and transport.
However, it’s also hopped the forum will also shine a light on employers who are doing the right thing and looking after their migrant workers as examples others could follow.
