The first step towards converting the university of Tasmania Cradle Coast campus on Mooreville Road in Burnie into a $24 million health precinct could occur this week.
A report, to be tabled at Tuesday night’s Burnie City Council monthly meeting for April has recommended the council rezone the site from educational and occasional care to business and professional services, paving the way for the proposed redevelopment of the site.
Developers of the proposed health precinct say it will improve access to existing health services and bring new forms of care to the community.
The site has also been suggested as a possible home for a Medicare Mental Health Centre, with two promised for the North-West Coast in Devonport and Burnie, with a site yet to be confirmed for the Burnie centre
The proponents are seeking $8 million from both major parties as an election commitment to help make the precinct a reality.
The site, which includes 100 car parking spaces, is located close to TAFE Tasmania, Hellyer College, and aged care facilities and only two minutes’ drive from the North-West Regional Hospital.
