A woman and her teenage P-plater daughter have had their cars seized for at least a month and are facing thousands in fines for high-range speeding.

Police allege they caught the pair going at nearly 160 kilometres an hour in separate vehicles on the Midland Highway at Conara on Saturday morning.

“Tasmania Police and the community know that speeding is a major contributor towards fatal and serious crashes on our roads,” said Sergeant Benjamin Kromkamp.

“On this occasion, not only was the high speed itself dangerous, but combining it with P1 driver inexperience – the results could have been fatal.”

Also in the north, they’re throwing the book at a 54-year-old man caught up in a minor prang on Launceston’s Frederick Street.

The driver blew 0.349 after being arrested, nearly seven times the legal alcohol limit.
