A 44 year-old Port Sorell man found guilty of assault and intent to commit bodily harm, including throwing acid on police officers has been sentenced to three and a half years in jail.

Earlier this week, Daniel Victor Gandini, who refers to himself as Diplomat Dan, was found guilty by a jury on two charges of assault and four counts of attempting to cause bodily harm.

Gandini represented himself during the three-week trial in the Burnie Supreme Court.

The court had earlier heard police broke down his front door in June 2021 following an 11-hour siege, after Gandini had assaulted his then-wife, locked himself in the house and told her he was going to blow things up and start a war.

One officer was taken to hospital with burns caused by the acid.

Gandini has been in custody since he was arrested in January last year.

In sentencing comments Justice Alan Blow said Gandini was clearly suffering a psychotic episode on the day of his offending and suffered a delusional disorder, for which he will receive appropriate mental health treatment while in jail.

Justice Blow sentenced Gandini to three years and six months in jail, backdated to January last year, ordering he serve at least half that sentence before becoming eligible for parole, which will occur in October this year.
