Crime Stoppers Tasmania is welcoming a 35 per cent uptick in tip-offs compared to this time last year, up around 2000, but concern is mounting about youth crime in areas like Kingston, while Launceston’s Coffee Republic Cafe has had to hire a security guard to deal with roving groups.
As for vehicle crime, police admit currently just over a third of car thieves end up being prosecuted, dropping to just over a quarter of those who break in to vehicles, but with the right information they’re hopeful that figure can rise.
“Last year 1,746 cars were stolen across the state, and 1,740 cars were burgled,” said Acting
Commander John King.
“If you know anything about a crime, I encourage you to report to Crime Stoppers Tasmania to assist
police in detecting offenders, preventing crime, and ultimately keeping our community safe.”
