Care standards provided to a 98 year old man in Burnie have been found wanting by a coroner examining his death in July last year.
Coroner Simon Cooper said appropriate precautions against falls weren’t provided by Umina [YOU-MEAN-AH] Park Nursing Home for Aubrey Reeve.
Mr Reeve was found with hypothermia on the floor of his room, near the door, and taken to the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie with a hip fracture but and returned to the home for palliative care, where he died four days later.
Mr Cooper said although Mr Reeve had a history of falls, movement sensors in his room designed to alert staff if he moved, were not functioning at the time.
He said the care he received at Umina Park was not of an acceptable standard and likely contributed to the fall that ultimately caused his death.
One Care Limited, which operates Umina Park has since taken steps to ensure faulty sensors are detected and rectified in a more timely manner.
One Care also operates aged care facilities at Port Sorell, Glenorchy, Kingston and Kings Meadows.
