Child abuse report looming

More light will be shed on the scale of Tasmania’s institutional child abuse scandal on Tuesday when a key report is tabled in Parliament.

Tasmania is bracing for the release of what’s expected to be a bombshell final report from the Commission of Inquiry.

The high-powered panel shone a light on paedophilia at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre as well as the Launceston General Hospital, out-of-home care and various government schools.

Among the report’s 191 recommendations is the urgent closure of Ashley, described by prison reform advocate Greg Barns as a “make-work scheme for Deloraine” aimed at propping up votes in Bass.

Key Ashley whistleblower and former clinical practice consultant Alysha was one of those who contributed to the COI, having left the facility with PTSD after being bullied for raising the alarm.

She’s told social media the report will be a solid, thorough, albeit tragic foundation we can build from.

“I’m scared, anxious, petrified of being in Parliament with people who have been nothing short of cruel to me,” she said.

“BUT. If there’s one thing I know it’s reform, and this report is a gift.”
