Call for Saputo dairy product boycott

July 1, 2024 11:06 am in by

Unions representing striking maintenance workers at the Burnie facility of multi-national dairy processor Saputo have called for a national boycott of their products as the strike enters its fourth week.

The workers walked off the job three weeks ago after negotiations on wages broke down.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union and Communications Electrical and Plumbing Union say maintenance workers at Saputo in Burnie are being paid 21 per cent less than workers doing the same job at multiple Saputo sites in regional Victoria.

The unions have called for a national boycott of Saputo cheese products including Cheer, Devondale, Cracker Barrel, Mersey Valley, South Cape and Tasmanian Heritage among others.

AMWU Tasmanian state secretary Mike Wickham says the boycott has come after Saputo withdrew an initial pay rise offer and offered another one for even less.
