The Burnie City Council will be asked to consider urging the State Government to use the former University of Tasmania Cradle Coast Campus at Mooreville Road as an adjunct to the North West Regional Hospital by converting it to an outreach medical services provider.

In a motion to be tabled at Tuesday night’s council monthly meeting for December, Councillor Steve Kons is proposing the facility could be used by NDIS services while users of the service are housed off-site in the future.

Councillor Kons is suggesting it could also be used for dementia care services and other services which do not require hospitalisation.

He says the current health system is being choked by patients being housed in the hospital system who could be more appropriately housed in an alternative facility.

The Moorville Road site was originally earmarked by the State Government to house the new Burnie Court Complex, but the idea was abandoned in favour of a CBD option after a huge public outcry.
