Major bridge works on the Victoria Bridge over the Mersey River on the Bass Highway at Devonport started on Monday.

The Department of State Growth says the work involves re-setting the bridge back on a more central position on its supports after some movement has been detected.

The work is expected to take around six weeks to complete at this stage expected to be finished by the end of next month.

Much of the work will be carried out below the bridge and won’t be visible from the road, but speed limits and lane closures will be in place.

The Victoria Bridge is one of the busiest bridges in Tasmania and as such, as much of the work that can be completed at night as possible will carried out between 9 pm and 6 am daily to minimise the impact on traffic.

However, the department says day-time work will also be on-going from 7 am to 6 pm from Monday to Friday.

Motorists are being asked to expect delays of up to 8 minutes during day-work and up to 15 minutes during night works.
