Work has entered the final stages of the upgrade of the Leith junction on the Bass Highway.

The Department of State Growth has advised connection and commissioning of the overhead lights will start today, with the lights expected to be operational by the end of the week.

Temporary lighting is still in place along with reduced speed limits.

The current upgrade was designed after the State Government received considerable backlash over a proposal to spend $10 million on an overpass, which would have seen several houses near the highway compulsorily acquired.

Costs for the upgrade have blown out due to a delay in the permanent lighting infrastructure.

The temporary lights were initially hired for four months at a cost of $94,000, but have now been in place for almost 10 months.

The additional estimated cost of $235,000 is expected to push out the total cost of the project to around $4.9 million.
