Award-winning artist Meg Washington unveils her highly anticipated fifth studio album, “GEM,” releasing Friday, August 8. Ahead of its debut, the latest single from the album, “Fine,” featuring the legendary Paul Kelly, is out now. Both the album and single are released through Meg’s label, Batflower Records, in collaboration with ORiGiN Recordings.
Fans of Meg and Paul, two ARIA Award-winning icons, will relish this new collaboration. Their creative partnership has flourished on stage and screen over the years, making this track another milestone in Australian music. Reflecting on the collaboration, Paul shared, “‘Fine’ is a beautiful, uplifting song, and it’s always a pleasure singing with Meg.” Meg added, “Paul and I first performed this song together at my Forum show in Melbourne last year on December 21, ‘Gravy Day.’ It felt natural to have Paul sing it with me. The song is a hymnal affirmation, written as a round, a series of overlapping sections. It came from a desire to sing what I wanted to manifest.”
Written by Meg, “Fine” was brought to life by producer Ben Edgar (known for his work with Dope Lemon, Matt Corby, and Angus & Julia Stone). A choral version of the song, performed by a men’s choir and Brendan Maclean, was featured in Meg and her partner Nick Waterman’s 2024 hit film, How To Make Gravy. The rendition won the 2025 AACTA Award for “Best Original Song.”
On the inspiration behind GEM, Meg shared, “This album is like a message in a bottle, capturing the time I spent quietly alone on a deserted tropical island—or was that all a dream? It’s about looking inward and discovering something precious within yourself. That’s why I named it ‘GEM,’ which is my name in reverse.”
To celebrate the album’s release, Meg has embarked on an extensive East Coast Australian tour, running through to August 30. Tickets are available now here.
