Improvements at the Burnie Airport at Wynyard will enable the facility to cater for the expected switch to larger aircraft this year by Qantaslink.
The airline currently uses De Havilland Dash-8 Q300 aircraft to service daily flights in and out of Burnie and Devonport, but is transitioning to the larger Q400 model.
The Q400s carry 74 passengers, compared to the 50-seat Q300s and are also faster than the smaller aircraft.
The State Government has provided $365,000 to upgrade infrastructure around the aircraft bays.
The Devonport Airport doesn’t require upgrades to cater for the Q400s.
Waratah-Wynyard Mayor Mary Duniam says regional areas such as the North-West Coast depend on airports for tourism, domestic travel and freight.
