North-West occupancy rates dip

The North-West Coast is the only region in the state which experienced a drop in accommodation occupancy rates for 2024, according to a report by the Tasmanian Hospitality Association.

The THA’s December Occupancy Report says the overall statewide average occupancy rate for last year was 73.02 per cent.

THA president Ben Carpenter says it’s a slight drop of less than 0.3 per cent following a tough winter faced by many operators, but shows Tasmania remains a destination of choice for interstate visitors.

All regions recorded an increase on 2023 rates, apart from the North-West Coast, with the December rate on the Coast dropping by 8.85 per cent alone.

The East Coast saw the biggest increase for the year of 2.75 per cent, while the North-West rate dropped to an average of 58.67 per cent, down four per cent on 2023, and dragging the state average down as well.

The North saw an increase of 1.98 per cent for 2024, while the South was up by 1.13 per cent.

Mr Carpenter said the THA remains focused on supporting regional businesses and driving visitation to those areas.
