Multi-national vegetable processor Simplot is planning to upgrade production at its Quoiba factory by around 30%.

The plant currently produces 28 tonnes an hour of frozen vegetables, but has lodged a development application with the Devonport City Council for upgrades which would see capacity increased to 36.5 tonnes an hour.

An environmental impact statement says there will be no impact with noise, air pollution, or water pollution on the surrounding environment.

The Quoiba factory, which employs around 300 people and produces mainly under the Birds Eye label, has been in operation for around 40 years and before the advent of frozen vegetables, was a vegetable cannery.

Simplot, which is the last remaining Australian producer of frozen vegetables, also operates a large potato processing factory at Ulverstone.

The application says the increased production capacity at the Quoiba will allow the company to remain competitive against imported frozen vegetables.
