The Parliamentary Standing Committee of Public Accounts will inquire into delays and cost blow-outs in the delivery of two replacement ships for the Spirits of Tasmania.

The inquiry will be chaired by Murchison Independent MLC Ruth Forest and will also look into delays with infrastructure upgrades in the Port of Devonport needed to support the new vessels.

It will also look at if the additional $80 million paid by TT-Line to the ship builder Rauma Marine adhered to caretaker convention, as the State Government was in caretaker mode ahead of the May election at the time.

The first replacement ship, Spirit of Tasmania IV, is due to be delivered in the third quarter of this year, and is currently undergoing sea trials in Finland.

Ms Forest says the inquiry will start in Hobart on Friday, with evidence to be taken from TT-Line in the opening session.
