Tasmanians are being warned to take care in severe weather that cut power to more than 7000 homes and businesses around the state on Monday morning.
Much of the Tasman Peninsula was without power along with Strahan, George Town, Geeveston, Brighton, areas west of Penguin, Sandy Bay, Mount Nelson and Taroona.
The westbound side of the Bass Highway was also blocked near Penguin by a fallen tree; police warned early on Monday it was likely to take some time to clear.
Leon Smith from the SES had this warning ahead of the conditions being caused by multiple cold fronts.
“The onus is on you to make good decisions and not travel out in these conditions if you don’t need to,” he said.
“Be extremely mindful of the potential for trees to come down and be prepared with your emergency home kit due to power outages.”
There was also a warning for abnormally high tides for the west coast on Monday morning, extending around the south coast to Hobart by the afternoon.
Maatsuyker Island recorded a gust of nearly 180 kilometres an hour early on Monday morning.
“It’s going to be very blowy during most of Monday, and if you do see winds start to ease during the morning, don’t think it’s over, because we do have another very strong front moving through during the afternoon and evening,” said Bureau of Meteorology Senior Forecaster Chris Godfred.
