Burnie Historical Society Guest Speaker shane Pinner From the Blythe River to the Dial Range: A Mining History
In 1862 surveyor James M Dooley surveyed the convoluted course of the Blythe River – deeply incised into country he described as “steep rocky hills” and “barren land”. However Dooley also noted part of the eastern valley-side was “conglomerate rock the principle ingredient being iron ore”.
Today’s Iron Mine Road north of Natone, and Copper King Road at Cuprona, give hint to a history of enterprise long since abandoned and overgrown. Shane’s talk will explore history of the manganese, copper and iron mines of the area, the great hopes held for them, their location, and what remains of them today.
