Police are continuing to investigate an incident at West Park Oval on Saturday, in which a football player was seriously injured during a behind-play melee.

A Burnie player suffered a cardiac arrest after being allegedly punched in the chest by another player.

The incident occurred in the third quarter of the round eight NWFL match between Penguin and Burnie, around 3:50pm.

Detective Inspector Steve Jones from Burnie CIB says police are appealing to the community for assistance and he's calling on witnesses to come forward.

Inspector Jones says police take any instances of assault seriously, and they need the community's help to make sure those responsible are properly identified.

Witnesses, anyone with information or video of the incident is asked to contact police on 131 444 anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or on-line at crimestopperstas.com.au

Meanwhile, the Burnie Dockers canceled Tuesday night's scheduled training session, instead scheduling sessions for players with Sports Chaplaincy Tasmania.
