The decision to conduct police recruit training courses in the North of the State is expected to see an influx of applications from the North-West Coast.

Until now, all training has been conducted at the Rokeby Police Academy in the South of the state.

Retired Police Association of Tasmania president David Plumpton says he had to commute between Ulverstone and Hobart weekly when he trained many years ago.

Mr Plumpton says it's tough on the families of recruits and he says it will make a big difference, especially with an added guarantee recruits will also be posted back to their own district after graduating.
