Big Tree brought back to life

AR tree

Augmented reality is being used to cement memories of a fallen forest giant in Tasmania's south.

An 87-metre swamp gum known as the Arve Big Tree near Geeveston was among the priceless natural heritage wiped out in the 2019 bushfires.

Tourism groups are excited at Huon Valley Council's bid to resurrect the tree in digital form with some state and federal funding, potentially reaching a younger audience and drawing them to the region.

Ninapatina and Flux Engineering of Port Huon have constructed an interpretative sculpture for this project, which provides a memorial for the Huon Valley community’s experience of bushfire.

Using an app now available in Google and Apple stores, visitors will be able to see the e-tree in full 3d when they step onto an interpretive plinth.
